‘To retreat’ means withdraw to a quiet or secluded place. Torfhús Retreat is blend of authentic Icelandic style and relaxed eco-luxury. Inspired by the architecture of the Icelandic Viking farm at nearby Stöng, our traditional Torfhús residences and Torfbaer suites are crafted from local stone, reclaimed wood and turf.
Tranquillity and mesmerizing scenery come together in a place far away from everyday routine. Surrounded by natural beauty and iconic sights, wilderness adventures and action packed activities are all within easy reach.
our sustainable mission
A minimal environmental footprint lies at the heart of our philosophy. Torfhús Retreat runs entirely on geothermal and hydroelectic sustainable energy. Building materials and furniture are either hand-crafted in our workshop or locally sourced and reclaimed when possible. Reused oak and pine are in abundance whilst an Icelandic fishing boat has been repurposed as a sofa and leathered salmon skins adorn the walls of our Viking Langhús. Living turf roofs hug guesthouse walls and electric housekeeping cars, a ban on plastic bottles and bottled water.
We get all of our 100% renewable electric energy from a local hydroelectric power plant - Bruarvirkjun
